The author, Rekulak, wrote Hidden Pictures, which we really liked. So we had high expectations for this book. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as his previous book. In fact, the first hundred pages were pretty slow. It was the second half of the book where action was happening. Still, there was too much padding. Extraneous details that caused me to skim paragraphs at a time.
Frank is the narrator. His daughter Maggie hasn't talked to him in 3 yrs, then out of the blue, she calls to say she's getting married - would he walk her down the aisle? Maggie's fiance ends up to be a rich guy - the son of a super rich guy. Nothing about the fiance is normal. He acts aloof a lot. The wedding will take place at the rich family's compound -- a place with fences all around, a security guard at the gate. Before Frank departs for the 3-day weekend for the wedding, he receives an anonymous note in the mail - a pix of a missing girl. Frank's wife (Maggie's mom) had died years earlier, when Maggie was 10. Thus, Frank's sister Tammy helped him raise Maggie. Tammy is a foster mom, and she has a girl she's caring for, and must bring her to the wedding (Abigail).
Like I said, this book unfolds slowly for the first half or so of the book. "L" and I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. It was okay. Not great. Not awful. We just wish we would have learned more about certain characters. They were a bit one dimensional. We would have liked to know what makes them tick. This could have happened only with 3rd person narration -- versus seeing everything thru Frank's eyes.
